Planning a screw pile foundation

What to have ready, what to ask any installer, and what affects the price.

What we need for a quote

The more of this you can send, the quicker and firmer the quote:

  • The site address
  • What you're building, and its size
  • Plans, or a sketch with dimensions
  • Whether it needs consent, and your engineer's details if you have one
  • Access: gate width, slope, and how far the site is from where a vehicle can park
  • When you'd like it done

Plans, or a sketch with dimensions, are the best start for a quote.

Questions to ask any installer

Whoever you use, these are worth asking:

  • Is the engineering included, or extra?
  • Will the torque and depth of every pile be recorded?
  • Who provides the PS3, and will the records suit your engineer and council?
  • What happens if the piles need to go deeper than expected?
  • What's included at the top of each pile: saddles, cap plates, brackets?

What affects the price

Every job is quoted for its site. The main things that move the price are:

  • How many piles, and how big
  • How deep the firm ground is
  • Access and slope
  • Engineering and any load testing
  • Supply only, or supplied and installed

Supply only

Builders and confident DIYers can buy ground screws, saddles, cap plates and bracket kits supply only. Helical piles are always installed by us, because they're installed to a target torque and recorded for the engineer.

Timing

Tell us your build date early, especially for relocated homes, where the piles need to be ready before the house arrives. For consented work, allow time for the engineering and the consent before install day.
